Leytonstone Arts Trail

Start

Intro

Every year for two weeks, artists across Leytonstone open their doors. Studios, living rooms, cafes, shop windows, garden sheds — wherever they work or wherever they can find a wall. The trail started with a simple observation: there are more artists in Leytonstone than most people realise. It's been a fixture in the local calendar for over 20 years.

What we stand for

We exist to give local artists a real platform. Space to show work, room to sell it, and the chance to meet the people who live around the corner from them.

The trail works for the neighbourhood too. More people in the streets means more people in the cafes, the pubs, the independent shops. The arts trail and the local economy are the same thing.

And there's something harder to measure. Two strangers standing in front of the same painting, working out what they think. A school kid seeing their work on the wall next to a practising artist's. That stuff matters.

Let's Fill Leytonstone with Art

Artworks displayed in a bay window of a white Victorian terraced house, with overflowing purple petunias in the window box below.

Let's Fill Leytonstone with Art is a project that has run alongside the formal Arts Trail for many years. We encourage everyone to join in with the fun of the Leytonstone Arts Trail and put your own artwork or that of your children in your windows gardens or balconies. In the past we have had photography, ceramics, drawings, paintings, knitting, embroidery - whatever your thing is - put it in on display. It is great to see things popping up in peoples homes all over Leytonstone - it brightens up the streets. Don't be shy - go for it!

What we believe

Art belongs where people actually live: On garage walls, in living rooms, above kitchen sinks, in the shop you walk past every morning without thinking twice.

A neighbourhood with a strong creative community is a healthier, more interesting, more resilient place to be. It gives people something to stop for, something to argue about, something to feel.

The best arts trail gets out of its own way and lets the work do the talking. Everyone in Leytonstone, whatever their background, age, or relationship with art should be able to find something here that feels like it was made for them.

Sculpture

Pick 'n' Mix: 2

Digital illustration of an Argos shopfront with its windows repurposed as art gallery displays showing sculptures and paintings.

Come and see the transformation of the Argos windows on Church Lane. Many years ago the Leytonstone Arts Trail transformed the old Woolworths Building into an art gallery - we have now had permission from Argos to use the iconic windows of that building for a series of art installations. These will be curated by Chris Davies, Ceri Hines, Carl Stimpson, Brett Banks, Kate Mayer. Let's see what they do!
